City of Ashes Review

The second book in the mortal instruments series sadly suffers from middle book syndrome. It is not as good as the first book, the plot is lacking, and the new characters are boring.

In this book, I felt that there were no stakes at any point. The plot follows all of the tropes of the genre and since the first book had few surprises, I thought that it was unlikely that the second would either. This meant that the ‘difficult’ and ‘life-threatening’ situations which Jace is placed in are no more threatening than a paperclip, they may do a bit of damage, but nothing worth worrying about.

The Inquisitor in this book is boring and predictable in her treatment of Jace. The other characters are still not very interesting.
