The Colonel and The Bee

This book was given to me for free in return for an honest review.

This was my first foray into the steampunk genre, though I do stand by my initial preconception that in terms of plot it is similar to fantasy and sci-fi. With this in mind, I did find that the plot for the first half of the book was a little slow. It seemed that the dawdling adventures of the Colonel on his ship the Ox were quite disconnected and seemingly irrelevant. It wasn’t until the second half of the book that the plot thickened and things picked up a bit. Suddenly all of the pieces fell into place.

I was a little concerned though that the ending was a bit rushed. In the first half of the book, we could spend chapters travelling from place to place, but in the end, we were spending days and weeks in the air in the space of one chapter.

The characters in this book were a little bland. Most of the ‘main’ characters seemed to have little personality or motivation. Their roles seemed very stereotypical so that the people themselves didn’t need to be fleshed out more. Our point of view character seemed to have little motivation to do anything or any purpose in the story. This made it feel quite passive and not very engaging.
